Relationship Advice on Destructive Attitudes

A few years ago, we heard a radio interview with Edie Falco, who starred as Carmela Soprano on the landmark HBO series, The Sopranos.

She talked about her life before stardom, working as a waitress while trying to get traction in her acting career.

We don't remember her exact words, but we certainly remember a point she made during the interview. It went something like this:

"I really learned a lot about people. Some treated me like trash when I was 'just a waitress.' Those same people were ready to kiss my feet and tell everyone they knew me after I became 'Carmela.'"

When you begin a relationship, you'll probably get a certain amount of respect and deference from your partner. Most people are on their best behavior, trying to make a good impression at first (okay, okay, there ARE exceptions).

But watch how they treat other people, especially people who they perceive to be "beneath" or "subservient" to them.

You'll get a good idea of how they'll treat you someday, after they're no longer concerned about making a good first impression.
